Major Gifts Officer - Job Description

Department: Development
Reports to: Director of Development
Status: Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Development, The Major Gifts Officer has primary responsibility for planning, coordinating and implementing the major donor and planned giving programs in order to meet the organization's major gifts fundraising goal and planned giving program objectives. The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for the direct solicitation of gifts, as well as for coordinating the cultivation and solicitation efforts of other senior staff and board leadership.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
•             Cultivate relationships with current and prospective major donors ($1,500+) and prospective planned giving donors
•             Steward donors through personal visits, email and telephone calls
•             Support board member and staff leadership fundraising responsibilities
•             Draft personalized solicitation and acknowledgment letters
•             Conduct research needed to acquire the necessary context, background and information required to solicit gifts and build donor relationships effectively
•             Collaborate with other development staff to maximize potential of current donors as major gift or planned giving prospects
•             Maintain donor and prospect records and track solicitation status in donor database
•             Maintain status reports on major donor, prospects and planned giving activity
•             Provide major donor profiles to board and leadership to support fundraising efforts
•             Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Development
 
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
•             Undergraduate degree with experience in a nonprofit organization preferred
•             Minimum of three years of direct major gifts solicitation experience
•             Knowledge of relevant fundraising principles and best practices
•             Knowledge of donor databases sufficient to manage donor records and solicitation status (including generating status and other relevant reports)
•             Demonstrated ability to successfully close a financial gift request.
•             Demonstrated ability to successfully conduct donor prospect research
•             Demonstrated ability to work successfully within a team and independently
•             Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
•             Willingness to travel locally to meet prospects and manage relationships
•             Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary
